The ophiocordyceps sinensis species is the fungus that turns insects into zombies. The Last of Us video game and the HBO television series of the same name were inspired by this fungus. This species is the most expensive fungus in the world as it is highly valued in Chinese medicine and is worth its weight in gold.

Cordyceps militaris, the mushroom in this post, does not create zombies and has the same benefits as the ophiocordyceps mushroom.
